What vitamin supplements should you be taking?

Vitamins are an important part of our daily diet. They induce and aid proper functioning of the body and are required on the daily basis. There are available through a number of sources and can even be artificially administered in many ways. Lack of any particular vitamin can at times have dire consequences. Care must be taken to include all the essential vitamins, nutrients and minerals our body requires into our daily diet. Vitamins supplements?are ideally dietary supplements. They are comprised of vitamins, dietary minerals and other nutritional supplements. These preparations are available in tablet, capsule, pastilles, and powder, liquid and injectable form. They can be taken as an alternative when we are not able to consume the vitamin in its natural form through certain food items.

Vitamins are a source?of nutrition and well being.

A good dosage of them allows the body to function to the best of its abilities. Following are some essential vitamins; their benefits and where they can be found. Vitamin A is found in milk, liver, orange colored fruits and vegetables like papaya, carrot and orange as well as green vegetables. This vitamin is essential for healthy hair and skin. It helps maintain strong bones and teeth and is essential for growth. It promotes good vision. Vitamin B is found in oats, seafood, meat, eggs, dairy products like milk and yogurt, beans and peas. It helps to produce red blood cells and carry oxygen through out the body. It regulates bodily functions and helps in maintaining over all body health. Vitamin C is known to aid the healing process, protect the skin against harmful UV radiation and help keep the body tissues like gums in good shape. It boosts the immune system which help fight off infections and aids muscle break down and re construction. Good sources of vitamin C are citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, grapes and spinach and broccoli. The richest and most abundant source of Vitamin D is the sun. The sun?s rays contain this essential vitamin which helps in maintaining bone density. It provides the bones and teeth with calcium which keeps them strong and prevents diseases like osteoporosis and other bone related aliments. Other than the sun?s rays, other sources of vitamin D include dairy products, oily fish, egg yolk, fruit juices and calcium fortified cereals. Vitamin E deficiency is known to be vaery rare and cause problems like mild hemolytic anemia in new born infants. Source of vitamin E include a wide variety of fruits and vegetables like grapes, mangoes, plums, mushrooms, potatoes and cabbage.? Vitamin K helps in blood clotting and reduces stem cell loss. It promotes growth and insures healthy bones. Avocado, berries, certain seeds, eggs, kiwifruit and leafy vegetables are good sources of vitamin K.

Apart from vitamins, certain minerals and fatty acids are also very important. Zinc is a very important mineral found in whole grains and helps maintain prostate health in men. Fatty acids, like omega 3 fatty acid is very important to the body?s well being. Present in natural form in oily fish and artificially in?cod liver oil?capsules, this fatty acids protects the retina and improves vision, especially night vision. Certain vitamins like vitamin B6 are present in chicken. As a result vegetarians loose out on it. For this reason it is advisable to consume?Vitamin supplements?so that you give your body all the vitamins it requires regardless of your dietary habits.

Robot on your shoulder keeps a friend (or parent) close

1 day

Ever feel like you have a little person on your shoulder keeping track of your every move, providing encouragement to keep up the good work or stop you from doing something bad?

That little person may soon be more than just your conscience; it could be a robot that provides real-time interaction between you and a remote friend (or parent) as you do what you do.

Imagine going on a trip, for example, and bringing along your best friend who?s stuck at home, or sticking a robot on your child?s shoulder to remotely chaperone a Friday night out.

The robot, known as the miniature humanoid, or MH-2, is under development at Yamagata University in Japan. It has head and body moves like a person. It even breathes like one.

The idea is that a person stands in front a TV screen or an immersive display with a sensor such as a Kinect. This person sees whatever the person with the robot sees.

?Meanwhile, the robot on your shoulder acts like an avatar, duplicating the speech and gestures of your friend right there for you to interact with directly,? IEEE reports in its Automation blog.?

For now, the robot is controlled by servos in a 22 pound backpack, which would make bringing along a friend for every moment of a trip quite cumbersome, as well as awkwardly geeky.

But when the telepresence technology catches up with the imagination as illustrated in the video clip below, this could serve to keep friends and family close when they physically far apart.

Food52: 7 Gorgeous Spring Pea Recipes

With each season come fruits and vegetables so distinctly themselves that we can't help but use them in as many dishes as we can, for as many meals as we can, before the season fades into the next. In the summer, it's tomatoes and raspberries. In the fall, it's mushrooms and apples. In the winter, it's beets and citrus. And in the spring, it's strawberries -- and peas.

Each part of the pea plant -- the tiny peas themselves, their shoots, even their pods (which can be simmered to make a broth) -- tastes of the sweet, sunny days of spring. Here are 8 ways to use them, before spring becomes summer.

Man wears briefs on head during Idaho burglary

(AP) ? Police in southwest Idaho say a man chose briefs over boxers to wear on his head as he held up a coffee shop and stole a safe.

Coffee shop owner Jason Wilson tells the Idaho Statesman says he believes the man was likely not prepared when he entered Big Star Coffee in Fruitland with an accomplice on Tuesday morning.

Wilson asked: "Who robs something with underwear on their head?"

Investigators say the two burglars made off with about $500 in cash that was inside the safe. Their actions were captured on surveillance cameras inside and outside the shop.

(AP) ? Ratko Mladic was a shadow of the swaggering general who once "held Sarajevo in the palm of his hand" during Bosnia's 1992-95 war as his long-awaited genocide trial opened Wednesday. Yet he still managed to inflame Bosnia's festering war wounds with the flick of his hand.

Hobbled by strokes and wearing a business suit instead of combat fatigues, the frail 70-year-old gestured toward the families of massacre victims in an angry exchange of hand signals through the bulletproof glass that separated them.

"Not even an animal would behave like that," said Mevlija Malic as she watched the trial on television in Bosnia.

Mladic is accused of commanding Bosnian Serb troops who opened the war with a campaign of murder and persecution to drive Muslims and Croats out of territory they considered part of Serbia. His troops rained shells and snipers' bullets down on civilians in the 44-month-long siege of the Bosnian capital, Sarajevo, and butchered 8,000 Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica in July 2005, Europe's worst massacre since World War II.

"The world watched in disbelief that in neighborhoods and villages within Europe a genocide appeared to be in progress," prosecutor Dermot Groome said at the U.N. court in The Hague.

Twenty years after the war that left 100,000 dead, Bosnia remains divided into two ministates ? one for Serbs, the other shared by Bosnian Muslims and Croats ? linked by a central government.

Mladic fled into hiding after the war and spent 15 years as a fugitive before international pressure on Serbia led to his arrest last year. Now he is held in a one-man cell in a special international wing of a Dutch jail and receives food and medical care that would likely be the envy of many in Bosnia.

But the fact that he is jailed and on trial is another victory for international justice and hailed by observers as evidence that war crimes tribunals more often than not get their indicted suspects, even if they have to wait years. In another court in The Hague on Wednesday, former Liberian President Charles Taylor faced a sentencing hearing after being convicted last month of aiding rebels in neighboring Sierra Leone's civil war.

That is heartening news for the International Criminal Court, which has indicted the likes of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir for genocide but appears nowhere close to having him arrested.

In a demonstration of Bosnia's continuing ethnic divide, people who gathered in the Serb stronghold of Pale to watch the trial on television applauded as they saw the ex-general enter the courtroom.

"Mladic is our hero, it's sad that we see him there," said Milan Ivanovic, a 20-year-old law student.

Prosecutor Groome told the three-judge panel Wednesday that Mladic was hand-picked by Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic because of his skills as a military commander but also "because Karadzic believed he was willing to commit the crimes needed to achieve the strategic goals of the Bosnian Serb leadership."

Groome signaled that prosecutors would use Mladic's own words against him in the trial, drawing on a stash of wartime diaries Mladic kept, radio intercepts and appearances he made on television during the war.

In one such TV appearance, Mladic showed a news team around the Serb artillery dug into hills overlooking Sarajevo and denied any involvement in war crimes ? foreshadowing his defense now that his actions were intended only to protect Serbs.

"I did not take part in any crimes. I have only defended my people," Mladic said. He has refused to enter pleas to the 11 charges against him in The Hague but denies wrongdoing.

However in another video he is heard boasting, "whenever I come by Sarajevo, I kill someone in passing ... I go kick the hell out of the Turks" ? a denigrating reference to Bosnian Muslims.

"(Mladic) held Sarajevo in the palm of his hand," Groome said, playing an intercepted radio communication of Mladic ordering the shelling of part of the city and a video of civilians scurrying across devastated streets to avoid sniper fire during Sarajevo's siege.

Groome said all the attacks were part of an "overarching" plan hatched by Karadzic and former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic to ethnically cleanse large parts of Bosnia of non-Serbs and carve out a "Greater Serbia" from the ruins of the former Yugoslavia.

Karadzic is also on trial at the tribunal following his 2008 arrest. Milosevic was put on trial here, too, for fomenting wars across the Balkans, but he died of a heart attack in 2006 before judges could deliver their verdict.

Prosecutors say they will use evidence against Mladic from more than 400 witnesses, though very few of them will testify in court. Much of their evidence already has been heard in other cases and will be admitted as written statements.

The first witness is to start testifying May 29, but Presiding Judge Alphons Orie of the Netherlands hinted that he may postpone the case because prosecutors have not disclosed all evidence to Mladic's defense.

Bosnia's president hailed the trial's opening as a historic day in the still-bitterly divided country's recovery from its war wounds.

"First of all we are expecting from this trial the truth," said Bakir Izetbegovic . "The truth and then justice for the victims, for the families of the victims. It is the worst period of our history."

Mladic gave a thumbs-up and clapped toward the court's public gallery as the trial got under way. He occasionally wrote notes and showed no emotion as prosecutors outlined his alleged crimes.

One woman in the public gallery called him a "vulture."

After a break in proceedings, Orie rebuked Mladic and the public about "inappropriate interactions" and said he might shield Mladic behind a screen if the outbursts continued.

Munira Subasic, who lost 22 relatives in the Srebrenica massacre, claimed that Mladic made a throat-slitting gesture toward her after she had held up both her hands, wrists crossed to indicate Mladic was in captivity. Mladic's lawyer Branko Lukic did not confirm her version of events, but claimed that somebody in the audience raised their middle finger at Mladic.

"He is very easily provoked and we had that gallery full of people very ready to provoke," Lukic said.

In Srebrenica, widows and mothers of the massacre victims gathered to watch the trial together and reacted with outrage to Mladic's apparent lack of emotion.

"This is so painful for us. It really hurts. We did not lose some chicken. We lost our sons," said Suhreta Malic, whose children and over 30 other family members were killed in the massacre.

Crying, she sat in front of the TV with photos of her dead children in her hands.

Usher Unveils 'Nostalgic' New Song 'Twisted'

Looking 4 Myself track featuring Pharrell is classic R&B but 'very relevant,' superstar says on 'MTV First.'
By John Mitchell, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Usher sat down for an exclusive "MTV First" interview about his hotly anticipated upcoming release, Looking 4 Myself, his unconventional album-listening experience with the off-Broadway show "Fuerza Bruta" and to give fans a first listen to the Myself track "Twisted" featuring Pharrell. He told MTV News' Sway Calloway the song is a "nostalgic record" that reflects the album's ambitious aim to represent the variety of musical experiences that have impacted the R&B superstar.

" 'Twisted' is more of a nostalgic record, so when you think about the classic R&B record, we managed a way to modernize it, even though that's very relevant," the singer said. "You hear records like Cee Lo, you hear Bruno Mars and also Andre 3000, and that sound is very relevant in this time. So this was kind of our way to tie it all together and give you something different that you probably wouldn't normally get from me."

Adapting current sounds and making them his own is a theme Usher is bringing in earnest to Looking 4 Myself and also reflects his philosophy of how to stay in the game. The star released his self-titled debut in 1994, when he was just 16, and has gone on to sell over 65 million records worldwide and score nine #1 songs and six more top 10 hits.

As for how he's managed to stay on top for so long, Usher revealed that it's important to never be insular when it comes to music. "Life is a workout, man, it's like a treadmill, and you gotta be with it, you gotta just stay with it," he said. "For me, I've had the fortunate ability to always be mindful of other things and other people. I'm not so caught up in what I'm doing that I can't be cognizant of what other people enjoy. ... Now, I think music should be used as a channel to really allow people to have different experiences. So, this album is all about bottling up those different experiences."

The connecting tissue that's given Usher the ability to explore world music — from full-on dance tracks like his new single "Scream" and his collaboration with David Guetta, "Without You," to more classic R&B slow jams like "Climax" and the old-school spare drum beat of "Twisted" — while delivering cohesive records has been his voice, which he said brings "the essence of soul and emotion" to each record.

"All of my career is kind of an unveiling, an unfolding story, and it ain't done. There's so much more that I'm going to do, so much that I've now just been interested in and been introduced to," he continued. "I just want that experience of having this very monogamous relationship with entertainment and acting in a way where I can really, really focus and become better."

Usher's commitment to tackling the changing face of music head-on and forging new roads in entertainment as he matures — he is currently training for a Sugar Ray Leonard biopic — is the key to his success, he said, concluding, "It's all about evolution for me."

Prostate Cancer the World's 2nd Most Common Killer

6:10 AM EDT 5/16/2012 by Yvette Caslin

Dr. Kris Gaston

?Prostate cancer affects the entire family,? shares Dr. Kris Gaston, a urologist at McKay Urology at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C., where he regularly treats men with prostate cancer. ?Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed and the second most common cancer killer of men in?America.?

The statistics are even scarier. ?African American men have a higher incidence rate of prostate cancer than any other group worldwide and they are primarily diagnosed when their cancer is already late stage. They have twice the likelihood of being diagnosed with and dying from prostate cancer. In the later stages of prostate cancer, it spreads to the bones primarily. Ninety percent of men who have advanced prostate cancer [have it] in the bones,? he reveals. ?My grandfather died of prostate cancer and being an African American male makes this [a] subject of interest.?

Here, Dr. Gaston, who?s authored several publications and lectured on the topic and is highly regarded for his expertise in clinical care, research, surgery and rehabilitation for the treatment of prostate cancer ? talks early detection, bone health and symptoms of prostate cancer. ?yvette caslin

How do you explain the disparities?

There are a multitude of factors: dietary, genetic and a huge amount of research have been on access to care. If you don?t have a primary doctor, you?re not getting screened. That is one of the main issues is getting people access so they can be screened.

Are there any symptoms?

It?s a silent killer, and the first sign could be a fracture from a tumor spreading from the prostate to the bone. Once it spreads to the bone, it?s already in [the] advanced stage. We are talking about getting men out, making a relationship with a primary doctor so they can be screened, [diagnosed] early and cured.

When should men start screening?

It is recommended that African American men start screening at the age of 40. Women play a huge role in men?s lives by helping them to participate in preventive care and [encouraging them to go] to the doctor to get screened. Cancer is extremely curable if detected in early stages.

What type of treatment should they seek when diagnosed with prostate cancer?

There are a number of treatment options for prostate cancer in all stages. The primary thing is getting them to a doctor so that we can find this cancer to treat it.

What is the purpose of the Bone Health in Focus program?

Men can suffer fractures and debilitating complications that can result in them having shorter life spans and being in nursing homes. We are really trying to spread the message about early screening and detection so men can seek treatment.

Any last words?

Breast cancer is an analogous cancer. Women are very proud breast cancer survivors. ? Men tend to shy away from it and keep it a secret. It?s nothing to shy away from and men can get treated, be cured and still have the same sexual and urinary quality of life ? if we find this cancer early enough.

KDDI reveals its Spring 2012 colection: Android smartphones are still hot

It's that time of the season again, as Japan's mobile carriers unveil more alternate-universe models that we'll probably never see elsewhere. Leading the pack is the final version of Fujitsu's long-time-coming quad-core Android phone, arriving as the Arrows Z ISW13F. With NVIDIA's Tegra 3, WiMAX connectivity, 16GB of built-in storage and a 4.6-inch 1280 x 720 display, Fujitsu's somehow jammed it all into less than 11mm of smartphone. The 13-megapixel camera includes an Exmor R sensor, while a microSD slot can add up to 32GB of space.

The AQUOS Serie is another belle of KDDI's spring ball, with a 4.6-inch 1280 x 720 display, 1-seg TV tuner and a 12-megapixel camera on the back. It's also the first phone to pack both NFC and Felica mobile payment hardware into the same device, mobile wallet fans. The collection is also joined by the HTC J and the final retail version of Kyocera and KDDI's "Smart Sonic Receiver" in the Urbano Progresso -- a phone that transmits sound through vibration. Any ex-pats in the mood for a new keitai can take a closer look at the rest of the new family at the source below.

Update: Kyocera has confirmed to us that the Smart Sonic Receiver used in the Urbano Progresso is indeed the same tissue conduction technology Kyocera demonstrated last week at CTIA Wireless.

Tizen OS will run Android apps -- with a little help from third-party software (video)

As Tizen's open-source OS continues to make its first steps into the world, there's some good news for anyone concerned with a weak app line-up. It looks like both Android versions and Samsung's own Bada SDK will be supported through an application compatibility layer (ACL) which works along similar lines to the Android app player on BlackBerry's Playbook. Open Mobile, which is responsible for the ACL, claim it'll have 100 percent compatibility with Google's back catalogue and be just as responsive -- some pretty heady statements. The company wants its program be included on the OEM side of the equation -- this isn't aimed at humble end-user tinkerers. For now, you can check how its ACL fares in a quick video walkthrough after the break. (It's worth noting that the demo tablet isn't running on the Tizen UI -- it looks like we'll have to loiter around for some more hardware.)

Wofford College President Dunlap to retire in 2013

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - The president of Wofford College says he is going to retire at the end of the 2013 academic year.

Benjamin Dunlap says he is announcing the move 14 months in advance so the college's board of trustees can begin a search for a successor.

Dunlap has served as the 10th president of the Spartanburg college since 2000. The former Rhodes Scholar, who earned a doctorate in English from Harvard, says he will return to the college as a humanities professor after taking a 1-year sabbatical.

School spokeswoman Laura Corbin says Dunlap increased full-time faculty from 84 to 127 while student rolls grew from 1,100 to 1,550. She says Dunlap helped the school average $12 million annually in gift income, far more than ever before.

PFT: Seau's home burglarized just days after his death

Ricky_Williams_107220195_620x350Getty Images

Running back Ricky Williams touched the ball 2,773 times during his NFL career, absorbing plenty of physical contact, to every part of his body.? But as his career ends (even though some think he?ll be back), Williams dismisses the link between concussions and brain damage.

Which perhaps conclusively proves it.

Appearing on ESPN2?s Dan Le Betard Is Highly Questionable?(the title of the show definitely is), Williams disputed the scientific conclusion that repeated blows to the head can cause Chronic Traumatic Encephelopathy.

?I don?t buy it,? Williams said, via Doug Farrar of Yahoo! Sports.? ?I?m only speaking from my personal experience, because I haven?t allowed myself to buy it, and I haven?t been affected.? Yes, I?m aware that football is a rough sport, but instead of saying, ?Oh ? I?m doomed to brain trauma,? I said, ?What can I do about it??? And I just started taking care of my body.? I found people, places, and things that really helped me ? again, I don?t know what?s going to happen to me in 10 years, but I look at the other things I?ve learned about, and the way I see the world.

?And to me, it?s like ? okay, yes.? If we?re going to spend six months brutalizing our bodies, I said, ?That makes sense.? I?m going to spend six months taking care of my body.? I started to equip myself with tools.? I started practicing yoga, and I started learning some hands-on healing stuff.? I found really good chiropractors and massage therapists, and I found that I was able to peel off layers of trauma on my body. I actually move better now than I did [when I played].?

The best news for the NFL is that Ricky, who played for the Saints, Dolphins, and Ravens, apparently won?t be joining the concussion lawsuits before the statute of limitations expires, assuming that the statute of limitations hasn?t already expired.

Angelina Jolie Takes Her Kate Middleton Royal Wedding Obsession To The Next Level

Angelina Jolie Takes Her Kate Middleton Royal Wedding Obsession To The Next Level

Is Angelina Jolie taking her Kate Middleton Royal wedding obsession to the next level? Reports are that engaged couple, Angelina and Brad Pitt are staking claim on a ?palatial? home 21 miles outside London. They are renting the mansion while the family is in England for the next 15 months because of back to back movie schedules.

?[Brad and Angelina] have decided to settle into one property rather than move around because they are going to be in London for 15 months,? a source told E! News. ?It seems better for the whole family if they have a proper base. They have been moved into a palatial mansion that resembles the White House on the exclusive Wentworth golf course in Surrey. It is in a beautiful, gated community, one of the most exclusive areas in the U.K.?

The mansion boasts of eight bedrooms and eight bathrooms, staff quarters, gazebo, garden, an indoor swimming pool and a playground for the children. And it has star clout since both Sir Elton John and Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, have stayed there.

Could this be the fairy tale backdrop Angelina had in mind when it was rumored she was using Kate Middleton and Prince William?s wedding as inspiration for her own?

As we reported on CDL a source said: ?Angie is fascinated by Kate, and like the rest of the world she fell in love with her and William when she watched their wedding on TV with Brad and the kids. She would never make her own wedding public and wants a private event on a much smaller scale. But she loved the Britishness of Kate and William?s big day and wants to incorporate some of those very traditional elements into her own ceremony.?

http://www.celebdirtylaundry.com/2012/angelina-jolie-wants-to-copy-kate-middleton-and-prince-williams-royal-wedding-photo-0505/

There?s no news on when the beautiful pair are planning to get hitched although sources speculated it would happen at their French estate in the fall. But I think a summer wedding in the English countryside has just as nice a ring to it. How about you?

'Thor 2' Will Be 'Huge,' Idris Elba Promises

Actor tells MTV News his character Heimdall will be 'more involved' in the sequel.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

A movie like "The Avengers" doesn't just make $1 billion in a little less than 20 days without having a few sequels already in the pipeline. So, of course, the folks over at Marvel are already hard at work on a handful of follow-ups, including "Thor 2."

MTV News spoke with Idris Elba while he was promoting Prometheus" about reprising his role as the Asgardian gatekeeper, Heimdall, for the sequel, once again starring Chris Hemsworth in the title role. "Thor 2," which is scheduled to head into production later this year, is said to explore the other realms of the universe, outside of Asgard and Earth, so that would mean a heavier workload for Heimdall.

Though production has not officially begun, Elba has already started some prep. "I'm actually excited about it," he said. "I literally just did a costume fitting the other day."

Elba, who has only seen an outline of the story so far, said that he does anticipate a larger role for Heimdall in the sequel, but added that "Thor 2" will also be taking a closer look at the people who populate the mythical world. "Definitely Heimdall's more involved, but also, what's more involved is who the Asgardians are," he said. "I think we'll see a sense of that."

As past interviews with the cast have indicated, the scale of "Thor 2" is quite large, but Elba suggested that the focus narrows in on character in a way we haven't seen before. "It's a huge film, 'Thor 2,' but I also think it's micro in a way that you start to look at people, who they are a little bit more."

Check out everything we've got on "Marvel's The Avengers."

Tesla coil gun exists, may shoot lightning

Tesla coil gun exists, may shoot lightning

Inspired by the graphic novel "Five Fists of Science" -- and perhaps encouraged by the plucky MIT student who made his own Tesla coil hat and survived -- a DIYer named Rob designed a Tesla coil gun, which he says is fully functional. Rob used a Nerf gun cast in aluminum for the housing and created a high voltage switch with a 3D powder printer. The gun is powered by an 18V ion drill battery and a flyback transformer housed inside a PVC plumbing end cap. Though Rob has yet to fire the gun, photos show what he says are sparks from the setup, and a demo clip is on the way. While video proof is always nice, so is preserving your life. We wish Rob the best with both.

Panasonic racks up a record loss for 2012, looks forward to profits and a partner for OLED TVs

Panasonic's yearly earnings are in and the red ink added up to a record $9.7 billion net loss for 2011. Number one on incoming president Kazuhiro Tsuga's list is turning around the company's TV division, where its heavy investments in both plasma and LCD manufacturing resulted in heavy losses. Currently the company expects a better result in both next year after 2011's write downs and restructuring, although its projections see total sales falling from 17.3 million last year to 15.5 million. Panasonic is expected to follow Samsung and LG into large screen OLED HDTV production and outgoing prez Fumio Ohtsubo mentioned it would likely look for a partner there. Sumitomo has been rumored as a potential ally in the past, though a preference for run-flat tires could not be confirmed at press time.
