(AP) ? Chimpanzees at a sanctuary for the animals in eastern South Africa pulled an American working there into their enclosure, bit him severely and dragged him nearly a half mile (kilometer), according to a paramedic official and local media reports.

The man was leading a tour group at the Jane Goodall Institute Chimpanzee Eden near Nelspruit, some 180 miles (300 kilometers) from Johannesburg, Thursday when two chimpanzees grabbed his feet and pulled him under a fence into their enclosure, Jeffrey Wicks of the Netcare911 medical emergency services company said in a statement obtained by The Associated Press on Friday.

Mediclinic Nelspruit, the hospital where he was taken, said Friday he was in intensive care in critical condition after undergoing surgery Thursday.

The man had "multiple and severe bite wounds" and was dragged nearly a kilometer by the chimpanzees, Wicks said.

Beeld, a South African newspaper, reported Friday that the man was an American researcher who was giving tourists a lecture at the time of the attack. The tourists were escorted to safety by staff members as the chimpanzees dragged the man out of their enclosure, Beeld reported. The sanctuary's director fired into the air to scare the chimps away from the man, and then chased the animals back into their enclosure. Beeld reported the man lost part of an ear and parts of his fingers.

The Associated Press did not immediately get responses to phone calls and an email seeking comment from officials at the institute and its sanctuary.

The international institute founded by renowned primatologist Jane Goodall opened the sanctuary in 2006. It is a home to chimpanzees, which are not native to South Africa, rescued from further north in Africa. Some of the chimpanzees at the sanctuary lost their parents to poachers in countries where they are hunted for their meat, and others were held in captivity in cruel conditions as little more than roadside attractions.

In the United States this week, lawyers for a Connecticut woman who was attacked in 2009 by a friend's chimpanzee filed papers accusing state officials of failing to seize the animal before the mauling despite a staff member's warning that it was dangerous. The chimpanzee ripped off the woman's nose, lips, eyelids and hands before being killed by police, and the woman was blinded and has had a face transplant.

Develop singing success before and after A Quality Plan With These Self Help Tips

The key to personal development is simply willpower. When you decide to better yourself in some way, make sure you establish why you want to improve. Personal development can involve quite a bit of effort, so if you can always remind yourself why you want to continue to develop, you will be able to keep pushing yourself.

Regardless of where you may find yourself on your quest of transforming into the person you strive to be in terms of your attitudes, behaviors, goals and emotions, remember that you need to continually step outside of your comfort zone. By stepping out of your comfort zone, you are growing as a person and taking risks which will ultimately bring about new experiences important to your success.

A great personal development tip is to always have integrity. If you want people to follow and trust you, you must be a person with good core values. If you do something to ruin your integrity, you will lose your following. Therefore, you should aim to preserve your integrity in any way possible.

Being too hard on yourself is a sure fire way of going through life the hard way. We are all human, and just as overcorrecting a child will cause them to withdraw or focus on the fear of failure, being hard on yourself will discourage you! You need to encourage yourself in as many ways as possible to keep you on a positive and productive path.

To be successful don?t procrastinate. Procrastination results in missed opportunities, if you complete the task today than you can move on to the next task singorama real user review right away. This approach actually reduces stress, since you do not have to rush around at the last minute to get all your projects done.

Act on your wisdom and live through your actions. It is only worth so much to gain knowledge and understanding. How you act on that wisdom defines you. Others cannot see inside to know your level of understanding, yet they can see your actions and how they benefit society, individuals or the world as a whole.

Effective personal development starts with making a conscious decision to change one or more areas of your life. Pick an area of your life where you have a problem that needs to be solved and make a plan that will result in a lasting change, not just a quick fix.

If you have worked very hard on improving yourself in your career but you have neglected your family or your social life then you may want to take some time out to focus on those things. It is important to be a well balanced person in as many areas as possible.

Keep chugging along. We?ve all heard of the little train that thought it could and of the tortoise that beat the hare in the race. Constantly working towards achieving a goal will eventually get us there. We just have to keep chugging or perhaps even crawling along and we will ultimately, reach our destination.

The importance of positive thinking and self-esteem cannot be overestimated. As you pursue your life goals and try to improve yourself, you cannot allow yourself to be defeated by past guilt or false, self-destructive beliefs. Replace thoughts of yourself as ?a failure? or ?a loser,? with positive beliefs like how to become a singer ?I am on the right track,? and ?I will succeed this time.?

Enunciate your words! Don?t be one of those people that stand on the edge of a group talking for what seems like hours and no one even realizes you are there! Choose your words carefully and speak clearly, so that everyone can understand. You can?t be appreciated unless you are heard and understood!

A great personal development tip is to know as much as you can about physics. Understanding physics is crucial to understanding earthly matters because you can?t understand these matters without knowing a little about heavenly matters. Knowing about physics in the present will help you learn beyond them in the afterlife.

Be sure to track your progress at very regular intervals. For many health and fitness goals there are applications for smart phones, which can help you. For other developments, you can create your own tracker with a simple spreadsheet or chart. This will help you to see how far you?ve come and also help you to maintain your momentum.

Self awareness and self control are a part of personal development. Knowing who you are, being confident in your perception of the world around you and controlling your emotions will allow your true self to prosper. Always stand up for what you believe in, but try and do so without infringing on others beliefs.

As established, there are a number of necessary elements to successful self-improvement. It can be hard at times. Sometimes, you may forget why you even care, but if you make sure you firmly establish in your own mind why it is that you want to better yourself, you will succeed.

All Critics (59) | Top Critics (10) | Fresh (57) | Rotten (1) | DVD (9)

It's among the most understated anti-war films ever made, effortlessly humanistic but far too subtle to indulge in preaching.

A model of simplicity and grace, with emotional effects that move you when you least expect it, the kind of great film that only a master can pull off.

It's still one of the key humanist expressions to be found in movies: sad, funny, exalting, and glorious.

It's an excellent film, with Renoir's usual looping line and deft shifts of tone, though today the balance of critical opinion has shifted in favor of the greater darkness and filigree of The Rules of the Game.

An artistically masterful feature, the picture breathes the intimate life of warriors on both sides during the [First] World War.

Renoir has created a strange and interesting film, but he owes much to his cast.

a monumental humanist work

Its very simplicity of utterance gives it a purity that makes other films that try to express similar sentiments feel forced and obvious.

Funny, heart-wrenching, nail-biting, caustic and profound, touting the futility of armed combat while turning imprisonment and escape into a microcosm for society's aspirations and contradictions.

Renoir's 1937 anti-war masterpiece created a new genre, the POW movie, and with his 1939 La R?gle du jeu constitutes a diptych of unparalleled excellence.

A timeless classic of acting and filmmaking genius that uses the artificiality of war to explore the very construct of society, and is a classic must-see.

The great illusion is that these men of the officer class are somehow different from the masses who suffered the bloodiest of wars. Renoir proves that they are not.

A vividly humanist, anti-war classic.

A sorrowful, acutely thoughtful, and wholly imperishable masterpiece...

Tragic. Moving. Funny. A pure joy.

The film makes its moral point about the futility of combat by emphasising the interconnectedness of all humanity via such shared experiences as hunger, desire and friendship. It's also a ripping yarn with a vein of charming and sometimes risqu? humour.

La Grande Illusion retains its power as an example of European camaraderie and co-operation.

It ranks proudly alongside The Rules Of The Game as Renoir at his stunning best.

La Grande Illusion is a sublimely poignant and lucidly insightful commentary on the social legacy of the Great War in Europe.

HEALTH & FITNESS: Losing the Baby Weight ? Easy Exercise Tips ...

As mentioned earlier, this blog is more than just about me or my team?s experiences and more in sports, health and fitness. Its a blog for the people, BY the people. And I?m pleased to share with you this amazing article by one of our readers, Katie, on tips which would benefit our female readers and friends. :)

Photograph by Jennifer Bradford

After giving birth, you can begin to shed the pounds you gained during your pregnancy without ever?having to set foot in a gym. There are many ways that you can get exercise at home and around your?neighborhood, which will give you more time and flexibility to attend to your newborn. Taking care of a?baby is a full time job, so having the freedom to squeeze in a workout at any available time of day right in?the comfort and privacy of your living room is both convenient and easy.

Before you begin an exercise routine, be sure that you listen to your body signals so you don?t overwork?it. Right after you give birth, your body needs some time to adjust and recover from pregnancy and being?in labor. Your immediate goal should be to incorporate healthy habits into your lifestyle, rather than trying?to reach a certain goal on the scale. Even though many celebrities are able to shed the baby weight at?an incredibly fast rate doesn?t mean that this is ideal, so don?t worry about trying to match their standards.?Gradually you?ll be able to increase the duration and intensity of your workouts as you get stronger and?fitter, and the results will start to show in a healthy way.

For most women, light exercise can be incorporated into your post-pregnancy lifestyle within several?weeks of getting birth, and usually after six weeks or more for C-section births. Always consult with?your doctor and discuss your plans for exercise and weight loss after giving birth. Your doctor answered?all of your questions concerning labor and delivery and provided advice on options like cord blood and?immunizations, and your doctor can do the same for you concerning your lifestyle habits and different diet?and exercise options. Once you?ve gotten your doctor?s approval, it?s time to burn some calories!

MOVE AROUND

To start out, try moving more during your day by walking and doing light activities around the house, like?cooking, cleaning, and gardening. Taking walks around the neighborhood while pushing your baby in its?stroller is a nice way to spend time together while getting some good exercise. Eventually you can also?switch to a running or jogging routine several times a week. Wear a pedometer so you can keep track?of your steps each day. This will help motivate you to move more, and it helps you to see the progress?you?re making ?throughout the day. Set a reasonable daily goal, and try to meet it, or even surpass it if
you have extra energy.

SWIM

If you have a pool, try swimming laps or treading water to burn calories. Swimming and water aerobics?are great calorie burners because you have to engage so many different muscle groups to keep yourself?afloat and move through the water. You?ll work your core, legs, glutes, and arms, and it doesn?t take?much time to get a good calorie burn. Visit a local community center with a pool if you don?t have your?own.

AT HOME EXERCISES

At home, you can turn your living room into a mini home gym. Roll out a mat and do sets of push-ups,?crunches, squats, lunges, jumping jacks, punches, kicks, leg lifts, and some stretching. Try lifting light?weights or using a resistance band to add toning and sculpting moves to your workout, which will burn?calories and build muscle to help you burn more fat all day long. Yoga and Pilates are other great ways to?firm your body and lengthen your muscles, increasing flexibility and giving you a long, lean look. You can?either create your own routine, or follow along with a workout DVD. Some are even designed especially?for new mothers!

Overall, try to keep your workouts fun so that you?ll stay motivated. Listen to fun, upbeat music while you?exercise, or try a dance-based routine like Zumba or belly-dancing (great for toning up your midsection!).?Don?t worry if you don?t have time to do a long workout every day. Even making small changes, like going?up and down the stairs more often during the day, will help you to burn extra calories. Take advantage?of your baby?s naptime to squeeze in some exercise, and before you know it, the pounds will start to?melt away.

As long as you stay committed, you?ll get back to your pre-pregnancy weight again and you?ll?increase your levels of fitness and energy along the way; making you a happier, healthier mom! :)

Aerobic Step Bench and Its Advantages

Aerobic Step Bench

The great advantage about the Aerobic Step Bench is that it offers an intense workout that is also a low impact cardiovascular workout.

Step aerobics became popular in the 80's when celebrities like Jane Fonda promoted it. It became a big hit because it worked in getting people fit, it was easy to do and it was affordable. One of the reasons that makes it still so popular is that it's so enjoyable to work out to with music.

The most simple step aerobics is just a matter of repeatedly stepping up and down on the aerobic step bench. The height of the bench should be such that you should be able to bend your knees without straining as you are stepping up or down.

Thus it is important that you buy a good quality Aerobic Step Bench that is height adjustable. It is advisable to avoid home-made contraptions as these may well not have the stability required to keep you safe while exercising.

The basic work-out routine is as follows:

Stand about a foot away from the step bench. Take you first step up onto the platform with one foot and then follow with you second foot. Then bring down the first foot followed by the second. When you bring your foot back down make sure to put your toes down first and then lower your heel down to the ground. You can choose which foot to step up with first depending on whether you are right or left footed.

You should aim to keeps your weight distributed while working out as this will reduce the stress on your feet. Make sure to begin at a slow pace and aim to pick up the pace over time. You will be able to move faster and start including arm movements as you practice more and become familiar to the stepping movements.

When doing step aerobics work outs it is advisable to wear good fitting clothing and a decent pair of trainers.

If you are serious about starting out with step aerobics then it is recommended that you buy a Fitness Republic Aerobic Step Bench as these are better built allowing greater height adjustment and made with a low impact base that is easier on the knee joints.

This is a great piece of home fitness equipment as there are many exercise formula you can perform using the aerobic step bench such as push ups, back squats, lunges and numerous other routines. These can easily be found on YouTube.

Using a step bench will helps improve cardiovascular health, builds lean muscle and improves endurance, helps develop coordination and balance and it is great for rehabilitation.

Artist Profile: Emma Gale : Moustache Magazine

Words by Rachael Crouch

I paint the famous at a price,
the naughty and the nice,
the quirky, the dirty,
and the very flirty.

- Emma Gale

NSW-based artist, Emma Gale draws inspiration from everyday life. Her work celebrates pattern, colour, and the use of different textiles, which combine to create bold and powerful images of recognisable faces such as Frida Kahlo, Elvis Presley, Andy Warhol, and Vincent Van Gogh, among others.

The common thread linking these pop culture references is that they are all centred on experimentation with textile desgins, but why wouldn?t they be? After all, Gale?s background is in graphic art and textiles.

It would appear that Gale?s interest is fame; not for herself, but for the artists, musicians, and politicians and how strongly they want it. Her minimalist technique speaks volumes about the human condition, and those that we recognise as famous, thus in the line of attention.

Court ruling offers inmates rare chance at freedom

DETROIT (AP) ? The Supreme Court ruling that banned states from imposing mandatory life sentences on juveniles offers an unexpected chance at freedom to more than 2,000 inmates who had almost no hope they would ever get out.

In more than two dozen states, lawyers can now ask for new sentences. And judges will have discretion to look beyond the crime at other factors such as a prisoner's age at the time of the offense, the person's background and perhaps evidence that an inmate has changed while incarcerated.

"The sentence may still be the same," said Lawrence Wojcik, a Chicago lawyer who co-chairs the juvenile justice committee of the American Bar Association. "But even a sentence with a chance for parole gives hope."

Virtually all of the sentences in question are for murder. When Henry Hill was an illiterate 16-year-old, he was linked to a killing at a park in Saginaw County and convicted of aiding and abetting murder.

Hill had a gun, but he was never accused of firing the fatal shot. Nonetheless, the sentence was automatic: life without parole. He's spent the last 32 years in Michigan prisons.

"I was a 16-year-old with a mentality of a 9-year-old. I didn't understand what life without parole even meant," Hill, now 48, said Tuesday in a phone interview.

He heard about the Supreme Court decision while watching TV news in his cell.

"I got up hollering and rejoicing and praising God," said Hill, who would like to renovate homes and be a mentor to children if he's released. "The last three or four years, they always put young guys in with me."

The ruling also alarmed families of crime victims. Jessica Cooper, prosecutor in Oakland County, Mich., said her office has been taking calls from "distressed" relatives.

"Now they're going to start all over," Cooper said. "It's going to take years."

The Michigan Corrections Department said 364 inmates are serving mandatory life sentences for crimes they committed before turning 18. The prisoners now range in age from 16 to 67.

In Monday's 5-4 decision, the high court said life without parole for juveniles violates the Constitution's ban against cruel and unusual punishment. More than 2,000 people are in U.S. prisons under such a sentence, according to facts agreed on by attorneys for both sides of the case.

It's possible that some inmates will win immediate release. Judges could also impose new sentences carrying a specific number of years and a parole review. Some inmates could still be kept locked up for life.

"Judges have options," said Deborah LaBelle, a lawyer in Ann Arbor, Mich. "The Supreme Court said to look at juveniles individually: their age, family background, peer pressures, home environments."

LaBelle said she took a phone call from 34-year-old inmate Kevin Boyd, who was 16 when his mother killed his father. Boyd had given her the keys to his father's apartment, was aware of her threats and was convicted of murder.

After hearing of the court's decision, Boyd told LaBelle that he slept "with hope on my pillow for the first time in 15 years."

Back in 1996, Saulo Montalvo was a 16-year-old getaway driver in a fatal store robbery in Grand Rapids. He never stepped into the store but was convicted of murder and sent away for life.

"My mom and dad had gotten divorced, and I thought I had something to do with it," he said of his teen years. "I placed this burden on myself and began to act out. I gravitated toward people who were into minor crimes, drinking and smoking marijuana, and sought their acceptance. ... I was so broken by what I had done."

He said the victim's family has long forgiven him. And if released, Montalvo said, he could "be a benefit to the society I left behind."

The judge who sentenced him, Dennis Kolenda, didn't like the punishment but had to follow the law.

"A community that's got a soul has to recognize children are different, and we need to treat them as different," said Kolenda, who is now retired. "Some are incredibly dangerous, but we never know with kids how they're going to develop."

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, who supported the state's life without parole law for juveniles, said crime victims won't be forgotten during the next round of court hearings.

"Every case has its unique set of facts," Schuette said. "We're going to make sure the truth is accurate."

Timbers take care of Sounders

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:34 p.m. ET June 24, 2012

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The Portland Timbers vanquished their archrivals and took some pressure off their embattled coach.

Kris Boyd scored his fifth goal of the season, David Horst converted a header and the Timbers earned a much-needed 2-1 win over the Seattle Sounders on Sunday.

"I thought we showed an unbelievable amount of character," said Portland coach John Spencer, who had been dealing with reports he was on the hot seat. "When (people) say players are not playing for me, I didn't see anyone not playing for me today."

Portland (4-6-4) jumped ahead early and held off the attacking Sounders for its first win in the league series since joining the MLS last year.

The Timbers went up in the 16th minute when Boyd slipped past the defense and sent a cross from Steven Smith into the net. David Horst scored on a header nine minutes later for the 2-0 lead.

Seattle (7-5-4) saw its winless streak extend to seven games, the longest in its MLS history, now in its fourth season. Seattle was coming off a 1-1 draw with Sporting Kansas City and a 4-1 loss to Montreal. Still, the Sounders were favored against Spencer's unseasoned Portland squad.

The Timbers entered the match in last place in the Western Division and 16th in the league in goals with 12. Portland took its third shutout in five games last Sunday in a 1-0 loss to the L.A. Galaxy. The team's disappointing start to the season and flagging offense led to media reports this week that Spencer's job could be in jeopardy if the Timbers fell flat against Seattle.

The Timbers weren't flat but the early lead didn't feel permanent against the aggressive Sounders.

Eddie Johnson dribbled past Horst and fired a shot past straining keeper Troy Perkins into the far corner of the net in the 59th minute. Freddy Montero had a narrow miss in the 74th minute and Johnson narrowly missed a header in stoppage time.

As the Sounders kept up a desperate attack, the game became chippy, leading to several pushing and shoving incidents toward the end. Montero and Portland's Lovel Palmer were both issued red cards in the final minutes.

It was the third MLS meeting for the longtime Cascadia Cup rivals. Last year, in Portland's inaugural season, the teams played to a draw in Seattle before the Sounders won 3-2 in Portland.

While Boyd said the win served "to get everybody off our backs and show that we can play," Horst said things never seemed that dire. He saw the win as an opportunity to build.

"Last year, we had a turning point (in a 3-0 win over the league-leading Galaxy), where we had a little run," the defender said. "Hopefully, that's what this is - a turning point."

Connecticut?s Microsoft Store Grand Opening

Slow news day? Got that right!? How about I tell you about my visit to the grand opening of the Microsoft Store in Danbury, CT then?? First of all this is the first Microsoft Store to open in New England and it?s the 3rd to open in the North East USA (with two others already up and running in New Jersey).? Of course there was a line to get into the store for the grand opening since visitors would get tickets to a concert later that night as well as a free bag and t-shirt.? While waiting for the store to open, some of the store employees gave away things like an Xbox, Laptop, and other accessories to certain winners who were waiting in line.? The long line of people was conveniently designed to wind down the malls halls and past the Apple store as seen above.?? The opening included a few speeches including?an appearance from the Danbury mayor and a one million dollar charitable software grant from Microsoft.

U.S. has plenty of medal prospects in smaller sports

Matt Emmons is a cancer survivor hoping to atone for a pair of costly blunders in Olympic shooting events. Teenager Race Imboden is seeking the first men?s foil medal for the U.S. since 1960. World No. 1 Brady Ellison is hoping for the country?s first archery medal in 12 years.

Check out the smaller sports on the Olympic docket, and there are plenty of compelling stories and medal prospects on the American side.

Glenn Eller and Vincent Hancock are hoping to defend their Olympic shooting golds from 2008. Shotgun specialist Kim Rhode could become the first American athlete to medal in five straight Olympics. Married shooters Sandra and Eric Uptagrafft are set to represent the U.S. in different disciplines.

World No. 1 Mariel Zagunis is seeking her third consecutive Olympic gold medal in saber, and the men?s team wants to improve on its silver finish in Beijing.

Medal chances are slimmer in field hockey, triathlon, modern pentathlon and badminton, but the Americans could deliver some surprises.

The U.S. has been without a team handball entry since 1996, when men?s and women?s teams automatically qualified for the Atlanta Games through their host country status.

Here is a closer look at a handful of the smaller sports on the London schedule:

SHOOTING

The U.S. is poised to add to its Olympic-best 103 shooting medals, including 50 golds. The London team, subject to trials, is expected to include four Olympic champions.

Eller won the double trap and Hancock took the skeet competition in Beijing, making the most of the knowledge they gained in the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit. Rhode won gold in 1996 and 2004. Emmons earned the 50m rifle prone gold medal in 2004 and the silver in 2008, but is perhaps best known for shooting at the wrong target in Athens and his rifle accidentally going off in Beijing ? robbing him of two more gold medals.

Emmons also was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and had his thyroid removed, making him even more of sentimental favorite this time around.

Other medal hopefuls include; Joshua Richmond, the world champion in double trap, Jason Turner, a 2008 bronze medalist in air pistol, Eric Uptagrafft, who was ranked No. 3 in 50m rifle prone, and Ryan Hadden, No. 6 in the world. Sandra Uptagrafft will compete in pistol.

FENCING

U.S. fencers won six medals in Beijing and could exceed that number this summer. The United States ? not Italy, not France, not Russia ? is the only country that qualified the maximum 16 fencers for the London Olympics.

Zagunis is still going strong eight years after she won in Athens for America?s first fencing gold medal in 100 years. The 19-year-old Imboden, hailing from Brooklyn, N.Y., is ranked No. 4 in the world and won six gold medals in individual or team competitions last year. Lee Kiefer, the youngest member of the team at 17, snapped a long drought for U.S. women when she medaled in foil at the 2011 World Championships.

The U.S. also could medal in a couple of the team competitions. Tim Morehouse and James Williams are the key players on the saber team that won silver in Beijing, and the men?s foil group handed Italy its first loss in more than a year earlier this season. The women?s epee group is coming off a strong performance in the World Cup.

ARCHERY

The U.S. is without a medal in archery since 2000, but that should come to an end this summer.

Ellison is a strong contender for top spot on the podium in London. He won the World Cup final in 2010 and 2011. Last year, he became the first archer in the world to win three consecutive World Cup stages.

A top-three finish for the American team of Ellison, Jake Kaminski and Jacob Wukie is a more challenging task. South Korea?s men?s team has won three consecutive gold medals.

First-time Olympian Miranda Leek, ranked seventh in the world and just 19, has an outside shot in the women?s individual competition. She won an individual event and helped the U.S. to a victory at a world ranking stop in Phoenix, and she placed fourth at a World Cup stage competition earlier this year.

If the U.S. is to field a women?s team in London, two-time Olympian Jennifer Nichols and four-time Olympian Khatuna Lorig need to qualify in Ogden, Utah, in late June.

The American men have won only two medals (both in Sydney in 2000) since winning two golds in 1996. No U.S. archer made it past the quarterfinals in Beijing.

BADMINTON

Tony Gunawan is set to compete in his first Olympics since he became a U.S. citizen last year. He was part of Indonesia?s gold medal-winning doubles team in 2000, and won the world doubles title in 2001. He then immigrated to the U.S. and won America?s first world title with Howard Bach in 2005.

Gunawan, of West Covina, Calif., will team with San Francisco-native Bach again this summer. Bach is competing in his third games, and a quarterfinals appearance would be a good showing for the duo.

The only other qualifier for the U.S. in badminton is Rena Wang, of Arcadia, Calif., who is ranked 57th and will compete in the women?s singles in her Olympic debut.

FIELD HOCKEY

The U.S. women?s team is part of a loaded Group B for the London Olympics which also includes gold medal-favorite Argentina, former Olympic champs Germany and Australia, plus New Zealand and South Africa. So the Americans aren?t expected to contend for a medal, but they do have a surprising showing last year for inspiration.

The U.S. punched its Olympic ticket with a 4-2 victory over Argentina in the Pan American Games final in October. It was the country?s first victory over Argentina since 1987. Argentina had won each of the previous six Pan American competitions.

The 2008 Beijing squad finished eighth, and seven women will make their second Olympic appearance. Midfielder Katelyn Falgowksi was the only American to make the world all-star team last year.

MODERN PENTATHLON

Margaux Isaksen is seeking a rare medal for the U.S. in modern pentathlon, one of the more obscure Olympic competitions. But she had mononucleosis earlier this year and it affected her stamina in training and competition.

Isaksen was 16 when she finished 21st in Beijing and showed improvement by winning back-to-back events in October and qualifying for the final round in every World Cup event she entered, except for one in April during her recovery from mono.

U.S. Army Spc. Dennis Bowsher might be the only other American in the event unless the U.S. gets spots from a reallocation from other countries in mid-June. The 29-year-old Dallas native is 44th in the world, and qualified for the London Games with a fourth-place overall finish in last year?s Pan American Games in Mexico.

TRIATHLON

Gwen Jorgensen leads the American group for the triathlon, which has yielded a lone bronze medal for the U.S. since the event was added to the Olympics in 2000.

Jorgensen, a collegiate swimmer and runner who completed her first triathlon in March 2010, finished second at an International Triathlon Union World Championship Series event in London last August ? on the same course that will be used in the Olympics. It was the best-ever finish for a U.S. woman and qualified her for London Games.

Sarah Groff finished third in the ITU rankings last year for the first-ever series podium finish by a U.S. athlete, and Laura Bennett, who finished fourth in Beijing, also could shine in London.

The men?s prospects are not as bright. Hunter Kemper is back for his fourth Olympics, while 28-year-old Manual Huerta, who fled Cuba in 1997 and became a U.S. citizen when he was 20, is in the games for the first time. Kemper and Huerta rank No. 27 and No. 35, respectively.
