Animals May Boost Social Interaction in Kids With Autism - Health ...

guineapig Animals May Boost Social Interaction in Kids With Autism

WEDNESDAY, Feb. 27 (HealthDay News) ? A new study finds that animals may help children with autism connect with other people.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired communication and social interactions.

Australian researchers compared how children with autism (aged 5 to 13) interacted with adults and non-autistic children when there were either two guinea pigs or toys in a room.

Compared to having toys around, the children with autism were more likely to talk, look at faces and make physical contact when the guinea pigs were present. They also were more likely to respond to other children?s attempts to play with them.

The presence of the guinea pigs also led to more smiling and laughing, and less frowning, whining and crying among the children with autism, compared to having the toys, according to the study, which was published Feb. 20 in the journal PLoS One.

The positive effect that animals have on children with autism may help encourage them to interact with therapists, teachers and other adults, said Marguerite O?Haire and colleagues at the University of Queensland. Animals may also help in the classroom, a journal news release noted.

?For children with [autism], the school classroom can be a stressful and overwhelming environment, due to social challenges and peer victimization,? the researchers wrote. ?If an animal can reduce this stress or artificially change children?s perception of the classroom and its occupants, then a child with [autism] may feel more at ease and open to social approach behaviors.?

Previous research has shown that strangers are more likely to be friendly to people who are walking a dog than those who are walking alone. Similar effects have been noted for people holding smaller animals such as rabbits or turtles.

A recent evidence review from Rome suggests that trained companion dogs could help children with autism.

This ?social lubricant? effect of animals on interaction between people can be particularly important for people with socio-emotional problems, the study authors wrote.

Estate Planning When It's Just the Two of You | Ellwood City News

Planning for the future can take a different shape when children aren?t involved. With no braces to pay for or tuition bills to finance, couples don?t have many of the financial obligations that require resources and can impact an estate. On the other hand, these couples must plan for a future that will not include adult children to give them a helping hand ? physically, emotionally or financially ? as they age.

Estate planning is important regardless of your parental status. A well-crafted estate plan assigns decision makers, designates heirs and specifies who gets what after you and your partner pass away. It allows couples to create contingencies for individual survivorship and can help minimize taxes. It also can help ensure your mutual wishes are respected as health or cognitive abilities decline.

Assign decision makers. Couples without children can each execute a power of attorney naming their spouse to act on their behalf. Each can also designate an alternate attorney-in-fact to act on your behalf in the event you both become unable to make decisions regarding your finances and property. This person may also be assigned the responsibility of executor of your estate1. If you have no children to name, you might consider asking a trusted family member or friend (generally someone younger) or a professional in the estate planning business to take on these responsibilities.

A living will?also called an advance healthcare directive?is another important legal document both of you should have on file. It specifies your wishes in the event of an incapacitating illness and enables your assigned designee to make decisions about your health care on your behalf.

Decide how your assets will be distributed. An attorney can help you draw up a will that specifies how and to whom your assets will be distributed when one or both of you pass away. Without a will in place, your estate will be handled according to the statutes of the state in which you reside. Often, when there are no children or designated heirs identified in a last will and testament, the surviving spouse is the primary heir, then other living relatives, which could include parents and/or grandparents, siblings and siblings? children. If this is what you intend, you can make that clear in your will; if not, determine how you want to split your assets among your relatives, loved ones and causes that are important to you.

Your estate plan can include strategies for giving financial gifts before or after your death. Under current federal tax law for 2013, an individual may gift up to $14,000 per person to as many people as he or she would like without gift tax consequences. You can also pay college tuition for anyone without being subject to gift taxes or using any of your annual or lifetime gift tax exclusions, as long as you pay the institution directly.

Create avenues for charitable giving. If you don?t plan to leave a significant amount of your assets to family, you may choose to give charitably to causes you?re passionate about. There are other ways to be generous in a tax-efficient way while you and your partner are both are still living. You can donate to a donor-advised fund and receive tax benefits upfront, while suggesting how the funds should be invested and later distributed to your chosen nonprofit organization. With a charitable lead trust, the charity receives payments for a period of time after which you or your heirs receive any remaining assets in the trust. A charitable remainder trust operates in the reverse, giving you or your heirs a stream of payments for a period of time (not exceeding 20 years) or for life, and leaving any remaining amount to the selected charity.

Plan for the unexpected. Your estate plan should include adequate insurance coverage for unexpected events. Be sure to name the appropriate beneficiaries, including one another, on your respective policies. Since moving in with a child isn?t an option, you may wish to purchase long-term care insurance policies that help cover assisted living services or nursing home care as needed later in life.

Consult the experts to create a comprehensive estate plan.

A financial advisor can help you and your spouse or partner make plans for the handling of your estate. In conjunction with legal and tax advisors who understand state and federal tax and estate planning laws, you can take steps to ensure you both have sufficient means to live well after the other passes and that your mutual wishes are respected regarding the legacy you leave.

The 5-year, $4.5 million NIDRR grant was awarded to the lead center, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, with Kessler Foundation receiving $850,000 as one of the collaborating sites in the NIDRR-funded SCI Model System

West Orange, NJ. February 26, 2013. Kessler Foundation is participating in the Collaboration on Mobility Training (COMIT), a large study designed to maximize independence among wheelchair users with spinal cord injury (SCI). The COMIT, a SCI Model Systems (SCIMS) Multisite Collaborative Research Project, is funded by the National Institute on Disability & Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR grant #H133A120004).

The 5-year, $4.5 million grant was awarded to the lead center, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), with Kessler Foundation receiving $850,000 as one of the collaborating sites.

All four collaborating sites are participants in the NIDRR-funded SCIMS program, a network of 14 centers that studies the course of recovery and outcomes following the delivery of a coordinated system of care for individuals with SCI. The sites are: Northern New Jersey Spinal Cord Injury System (NNJSCIS) (a cooperative effort of Kessler Foundation, Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation and University of Medicine & Dentristry of NJ); the Midwest Regional Spinal Cord Injury Care System (Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago); and the South Florida SCI System (University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, The Miami Project and Jackson Memorial Hospital). COMIT will also collaborate with Dr. Lee Kirby and colleagues from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

"A wheelchair is often seen as a symbol of disability. However, for many people with SCI and lower limb paralysis the wheelchair is the single most important factor in their ability to be independent after their injury," said Trevor Dyson-Hudson, M.D., Director of SCI Research at Kessler Foundation and principal investigator for the NNJSCIS. "Through training in wheelchair skills and maintenance, our goal is to minimize obstacles to independence caused by environmental barriers and wheelchair malfunction."

The ability to use and maintain a wheelchair effectively is a factor in life satisfaction and community participation, according to research conducted by Michael Boninger, M.D., professor and chair, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (Arch Phys Med Rehabil. 2012 Dec;93(12):2237-43.). Today, patients spend less time in the hospital after injury, which means less time to learn how to use and maintain their wheelchairs. More than 500 individuals with spinal cord injury will participate in COMIT, which will examine the impact of web-based training and group sessions on wheelchair skills and maintenance.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The latest signs of a rebound in housing are sending stocks sharply higher on Wall Street.

The Dow Jones industrial average jumped nearly 116 points to end at 13,900 Tuesday, led by a 6 percent surge in Home Depot. The country's biggest home improvement store chain reported a big increase in earnings.

In another sign that the housing market was gaining steam, the government reported that sales of new homes jumped 16 percent last month to the highest level since July 2008.

That sent the stocks of homebuilders higher. Hovnanian jumped 11 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 rose nine points to 1,496. The Nasdaq rose 13 to 3,129.

Two stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was average at 3.8 billion shares.

Samsung confirms Galaxy S IV launch on March 14th in NYC

It was true. And then it wasn't. Now, here at MWC in Barcelona, Samsung has finally confirmed its rumored March 14th launch event for the much-anticipated Galaxy S IV. The smartphone giant's latest flagship is set to debut in New York City, apparently by popular demand. "We introduced the Galaxy S III in London last year," Samsung Electronics' mobile division chief JK Shin told Edaily news. "This time we changed the Venue (to New York)... as we were bombarded with requests from US mobile carriers to unveil the Galaxy S IV in the country." As with any such announcement, details are sparse at best, so we'll need to wait a few more weeks before confirming specs and appearance for the Galaxy S III successor. But, as always, you're welcome to shout out your best guesses in the comments.

Donor, Know Thy Charity: The Best, Biggest and Worst Nonprofits

Nearly everyone has felt the pinch of the economic slump in the past five years. But despite tough times, Americans tend to be a remarkably generous nation of people. According to Grantspace.org, based on recent reports from Giving USA Foundation?and the?Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, ?Total charitable contributions by individuals, corporations, and foundations was an estimated $298.42 billion in 2011, up 4 percent in current dollars and 0.9 percent in inflation-adjusted dollars from a revised total of $286.91 billion in 2010.?

This breaks down to an average of nearly $1,000 for every man, woman and child in the nation. Not bad, right? But how much of that money is actually going to the causes we care about? How do we know if the sacrifices we make are feeding the hungry and housing the homeless, rather than lining the pockets of a corporate CEO?

There?s a lot of information floating around out there about who makes what, and how effective various charities are. Unfortunately, much of what is passed around is either outdated or totally inaccurate. So I decided to do my own investigation to see who are the best out there when it comes to putting my hard-earned charitable dollars to work, especially compared to some of the biggest, most popular nonprofits we tend to give to.

Of course, there are lots of criteria we could use in deciding where to give our money. Some prefer local organizations, where they can see direct results of their gifts, right in their own community. Others lean toward historically established, widely known nonprofits who have proven their staying power over time. And of course, there are factors like the organizational mission statement, their stance on particular social issues and whether that charity has been in the news lately (not always a good thing).

For my own purposes, I decided to boil it down to three factors: size, CEO compensation and organizational efficiency. Again, there are many ways to determine the latter, though having spent more than a dozen years in the nonprofit fundraising profession myself, the one that people tend to be most interested in is efficiency. The easiest way to measure this is to break out what percentage of the charity?s budget goes toward ?indirect,? or administrative costs (like the CEO, fundraising, and other administrative staff), compared with the amount committed to ?direct services.?

To be clear, ?direct services? doesn?t refer to money or goods given directly to those in need. Generally, it includes all staff and organization costs related to those direct services. So whereas a Vice President or a financial officer would be an indirect expense, a case manager or nurse ? along with direct assistance, meals and housing ? would be lumped together as direct expenses.

Finally, because there are literally more than a million charities in the United States, I wanted to boil my list down to those nonprofits that were large enough for most of us to know about them. So I looked only at organizations with annual budgets of $100 million or more.

THE BEST

So, given these factors, who are the best of the best? Following are five major-league top performers:

Name: Direct Relief International
Mission: Healthy people. Better world. Since 1948.
Annual Budget: $405,035,176
Efficiency: 98.8%
CEO Salary: $294,097

Name: The Conservation Fund
Mission: America?s partner in conservation.
Annual Budget: $242,376,138
Efficiency: 97.4%
CEO Salary: $429,647

Name: United Nations Foundation
Mission: Connecting people, ideas and resources with the United Nations.
Annual Budget: $192,737,803
Efficiency: 86.5%
CEO Salary: $399,949

Name: Teach for America
Mission: Building the movement to eliminate educational inequity.
Annual Budget: $270,472,850
Efficiency: 83.4%
CEO Salary: $364,062

Name: The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International
Mission: Enabling Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace.
Annual Budget: $236,590,554
Efficiency: 86.9%
CEO Salary: $166,981

THE BIGGEST

Interestingly, none of these made the top-ten list of most followed charities, according to Charity Navigator. So how do the biggest of the Big Boys compare to our frontrunners listed above? For the five organizations operating with an annual budget of $1 billion or more, it?s a mixed bag:

Name: American Red Cross
Mission: Helping people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.
Annual Budget: $3,422,010,386
Efficiency: 92.2%
CEO Salary: $501,122

Name: Feeding America
Mission: The nation?s food bank network.
Annual Budget: $1,179,643,651
Efficiency: 97.2%
CEO Salary: $524,052

Name: Smithsonian Institution
Mission: Seriously amazing.
Annual Budget: $1,101,404,223
Efficiency: 72.1%
CEO Salary: $517,318

Name World Vision
Mission; Building a better world for children.
Annual Budget: $1,078,549,155
Efficiency: 85.6%
CEO Salary: $379,861

Name: Food for the Poor
Mission: Serving the poorest of the poor.
Annual Budget: $1,050,829,851
Efficiency: 96.8%
CEO Salary: $388,979

THE WORST

Finally, the list would hardly be complete without including some of the biggest offenders. Keeping with the same criteria, we looked only at those charities with annual budgets of $100 million or more. This means that, although there are some bad guys not listed here, these are the ones with the broadest reach, and they?re also the ones you?ve most likely heard of:

Name: Paralyzed Veterans of America
Mission: Maximizing the quality of life for veterans and all people with spinal cord injury or disease.
Annual Budget: $114,364,700
Efficiency: 33.1%
CEO Salary: $189,983

Name: American Diabetes Association
Mission: Cure, care, commitment
Annual Budget: $197,368,988
Efficiency: 66.5%
CEO Salary: $545,950

Name: March of Dimes
Mission: Improving the health of babies
Annual Budget: $207,290,112
Efficiency: 65.9%
CEO Salary: $545,982

Name: Hadassah, The Women?s Zionist Organization of America
Mission: Devoted to Judaism, Zionism, and American ideals.
Annual Budget: $136,654,319
Efficiency: 48.1%
CEO Salary: $78,888 (three other administrators are paid more than $170,000 each)

Name: Ducks Unlimited
Mission: A world leader in wetlands conservation.
Annual Budget: $155,701,461
Efficiency: 77.0%
CEO Salary: $257,839 (two other administrators are paid more than $280,000 each)

Don?t see your preferred charity on the list? Visit Charity Navigator yourself and look them up. This service assesses more than 6,000 nonprofits around the world. Another good resource is Guidestar, which posts nearly every nonprofit?s financial reports for public review.

Perhaps the best advice I can offer is to be as discriminating about the charities you support as you are about the products and services you pay for. Some of the most notorious charities make the most overtly emotional appeals, hoping to create a ?feel good? moment for donors. But every nonprofit organization should freely offer up their annual report and copies of their 990 financial statements upon request. If they won?t, chances are they?re either trying to hide something or they?re simply too disorganized to fulfill the request. Either way, the lack of transparency is telling.

An educated public is an empowered public. Tell your dollars where to go and hold those you entrust with your gifts accountable. Our collective impact yields far more than a warm, fuzzy feeling. We can change the world if we?re smart about it. Do your homework; it?s worth the extra effort.

Life extension enthusiasts rejoice: Your brain cells can outlive your body

Brain cells can live at least twice as long as the organisms in which they reside, according to new research.

The study, published today (Feb. 25) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that mouse neurons, or brain cells, implanted into rats can survive with the rats into old age, twice as long as the life span of the original mice.

The findings are good news for life extension enthusiasts.

"We are slowly but continuously prolonging the life of humans," said study co-author Dr. Lorenzo Magrassi, a neurosurgeon at the University of Pavia in Italy.

So if the human life span could be stretched to 160 years, "then you are not going to lose your neurons, because your neurons do not have a fixed lifetime."

Long-lived cells

While most of the cells in the human body are being constantly replaced, humans are born with almost all the neurons they will ever have. [10 Odd Facts About the Brain]

Magrassi and his colleagues wanted to know whether neurons could outlive the organisms in which they live (barring degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's).

To do so, the researchers took neurons from mice and implanted them into the brains of about 60 rat fetuses.

The team then let the rats live their entire lives, euthanizing them when they were moribund and unlikely to survive for more than two days, and then inspected their brains. The life span of the mice was only about 18 months, while the rats typically lived twice as long.

The rats were found to be completely normal (though not any smarter), without any signs of neurological problems at the end of their lives.

And the neurons that had been transplanted from mice were still alive when the rats died. That means it's possible the cells could have survived even longer if they were transplanted into a longer-lived species.

Life extension

The findings suggest that our brain cells won't fail before our bodies do.

"Think what a terrible thing it could be if you survive your own brain," Magrassi told LiveScience.

While the findings were done in rats, not humans, they could also have implications for neuronal transplants that could be used for degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease, Magrassi said.

But just because brain cells may be able to live indefinitely doesn't mean humans could live forever.

Aging is dependent on more than the life span of all the individual parts in the body, and scientists still don't understand exactly what causes people to age, Magrassi said.

Panetta tuning in to C-SPAN to await Hagel vote

(AP) ? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has apparently had all the Pentagon farewells he can take.

The defense chief is working from his California home, awaiting the expected Senate vote on the nomination of former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel to take over the Pentagon job.

Pentagon spokesman George Little says Panetta will be tuning in to the C-SPAN Senate channel in the next few days, hoping that Hagel is confirmed. Panetta has been eager to retire to his walnut farm in Carmel for weeks, and already was feted at two farewell ceremonies. But his plans have been repeatedly blocked by delays as senators battle over Hagel's nomination.

The Senate dispute meant Panetta had to attend a NATO meeting in Brussels last week that he expected Hagel would take.

EPA findings at toxic California Superfund site concern area residents

By Stephen Stock and David Paredes, NBCBayArea.com

Some residents who live around Moffett Federal Airfield near Mountain View, Calif., say they are scared. Others say they?re not worried at all.

Depending on whom you talk to, the Environmental Protection Agency?s findings of higher than expected levels of TCE in the air and in the groundwater near the Mountain View property is either a cause for big concern or no big deal.

But one thing is certain. Everyone is talking about the new test results from the EPA showing a presence of toxic chemicals in the air and in the groundwater in and around the Middlefield, Ellis, Whisman (or M-E-W) Superfund site.

According to the EPA, the underground Superfund site include a wide variety of toxic chemicals including PCE and vinyl chloride, chemicals left over from the budding semi-conductor industry that got its start in the buildings along Middlefield and Whisman Roads and Ellis Street.

The chemical of most concern and most quantity in the toxic underground plume is a chemical called trichloroethylene, known as TCE.?It's a cleaning solvent once commonly used by the military and the budding semi-conducting industry 30 years ago.

The EPA says that TCE is a toxic solvent that causes cancer in people and heart deformities in unborn babies. According to EPA experts the toxic plume has been lurking underground for decades ever since nascent semi-conductor companies apparently dumped or allowed TCE and other chemicals to leak into the ground.

According to EPA officials the United States military also used TCE to clean airplanes and vehicles during that same time period.

The plume extends from under the runway at Moffett Field a mile and a half south and west under Highway 101 and past Middlefield Road. To the north it goes to Whisman Road and south to just past Ellis Street.

The plume of mostly TCE is believed by EPA investigators to be about a half-mile wide at its widest point.

After NBC Bay Area?s Investigative Unit began asking questions in April 2012 about possible health effects of the TCE plumes, the Cancer Prevention Institute of California (CPIC) opened its own probe.

After exhaustive research and analysis of three decades worth of health data, California?s state cancer registry announced that it found a higher than expected number of people living in neighborhood surrounding the M-E-W Superfund site who had contracted a group of cancers the registry?s scientists call non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

The higher than expected incidence of these cancers occurred during the years 1996 to 2005.

NBC Bay Area

Now the EPA admits that until recently it had somehow missed some ?hot spots? of higher than acceptable levels of TCE in groundwater and in the air in several homes and more than 20 commercial buildings in the area. Two of the hotspots were found by EPA investigators along Evandale Avenue outside the original plume area.

That concerns some residents who live on that road. Residents like Theresa Larrieu, who has lived in a home along Evandale with her family for a quarter century. Larrieu said that the family always knew the M-E-W Superfund was nearby but figured it didn?t directly affect them since it wasn?t right next door. The Superfund site was far enough away, Larrieu thought, to be present but not an impact on her family?s health or life. Now, with these new EPA test results, the TCE plumes appears to actually be right next door and it may even be under Larrieu?s home. The EPA has conducted air, water and soil tests in and around the home but the results have not come back as of this writing.

Larrieu says she's worried and is holding her breath waiting on the results of those air and water sample tests the EPA took from her home. ?Scared. Nervous. Worried. Very worried,? Larrieu said when asked to describe her emotions. ?(There?s) way more suspense than I need in my life.?

?Your first thought is your health, is this affecting us is this affecting other neighbors that I know had health issues,? said Larrieu.

The EPA shares Larrieu?s concerns and M-E-W Superfund Site manager Alana Lee emphasizes they are working hard to address and clean up the mess. ?We cleaned up over 5 1/4 billion gallons of contaminated water and over 110,000 pounds of toxic contaminant,? said Lee.

But Lee also said that the EPA also missed these hot spots of TCE both in groundwater and in the air inside some buildings along Evandale Avenue including two homes outside the original plume area.

?The concentration (found there) is very high,? said Lee, ?A very high concentration.?

How high?

According to documents from test results, the highest TCE levels that the EPA measured in ground water in the area reached 130,000 parts per billion. The EPA considers anything over 5 parts per billion unsafe.

In the commercial buildings nearby, including two now occupied by Google, EPA tests found TCE in the air at levels 26 times higher than the level considered by the EPA to be acceptable and safe.

?Once we found these concentrations, which were a surprise, we took immediate action,? said Lee.

EPA

Bruce Panchal?s home is one of the two houses located on Evandale where the EPA found high levels of TCE. The companies responsible for the toxic chemical cleanup installed a series of four pipes in and around his home to ventilate the toxic TCE fumes leeching from the ground away from the house?s interior to the outside.

Even so Panchal said he?s not worried. ?They found a high concentration and with the system it pumps out all the fumes so it safe,? said Panchal.

Panchal and his family have lived in his home along Evandale for 45 years. He said he worked for the budding semi-conductor businesses that got their start in his neighborhood. He even said he handled the chemicals now in question and dumped them in the ground back then.

Despite the new contraptions now pumping air away from the inside of his house, he says he isn?t worried about his or his family?s health. ?I?m living proof that they have an issue with the fumes but it is not death defying or a detriment to your health,? said Panchal.

EPA officials said they also found high levels of TCE in more than twenty different commercial buildings between Whisman Road and Ellis Street. Included among those buildings are two new office complexes for Google employees where, the EPA says, renovations and construction allowed higher than expected levels of TCE to leech from the ground through the buildings? concrete slabs and into the air inside.

It is in some of these buildings where EPA investigators found levels of TCE vapors in the interior air that were as much as 26 times higher than acceptable safe levels with air conditioning systems off.

The EPA says it has systems in place in and around those buildings to keep vapors outside.

Google tells us they take this matter seriously and they?ve already taken measures to ensure that the buildings and the work area is safe.

Theresa Larrieu worries that it may be too late to keep her family from feeling the health effects of this toxic plume. She wonders how long they may have been exposed to these vapors and chemicals that went undetected until recently.

?It is scary,? said Larrieu. ?I?m very scared. I have children. I have grandchildren.?

Larrieu also remains concerned that not even the EPA can say how long the fumes have been leeching into the neighborhood or how long she and her family have unknowingly been exposed.

When we asked the EPA if they knew exactly how long have these newly discovered TCE hot spots had been there the EPA?s Superfund Site manager Alana Lee said, ?We don?t know.?

When we asked whether the toxic chemicals migrate underground or traveled down Evandale Avenue or whether those chemicals had been lurking there underground along with the rest of the toxic plume for decades, Lee had the same answer. ?We don?t know.?

The EPA said it will take decades more to clean up this toxic mess.

Stretches that Make you Look and Feel Taller

Feb 24, 2013 9:11am

Katie?s Take

?Sit up straight!? ?A meme that is easier said than done! But the benefits of straightening up can have a lasting effect on our bodies and minds.

Katie Couric sat down with Tara Stiles, named ?Yoga Rebel? by the New York Times and owner of Strala Yoga, to talk about how simple stretches can help our bodies, minds and make us feel and look taller.

Yoga, an exercise that allows increased blood flow through stretching and deep breathing, has been practiced for over 5000 years and practiced by 11 million Americans. Yoga isn?t just for the contortionists; according to Stiles all it requires is deep breathing.

By taking in large breaths, tension in our muscles is released which Stiles says helps aids in overall health from in the inside out. She calls yoga a ?massage for our organs? that encourages us to live a healthier and happier lifestyle while increasing our flexibility and strengthening our muscles.

And the great thing is, you don?t have to seek out a yoga studio to take advantage of the benefits. Stiles showed Katie?s some simple stretches that people can do while sitting at their desks or even watching TV.? By taking a few minutes to stretch throughout the day, you can release tension in your body and lengthen your muscles so you can look and feel taller. So straighten up and take a deep breath, you will feel and see a difference immediately.

How To Grow Your Home Business On A Budget | Content for Reprint

With the growing powers and capabilities of the internet and smart phones, businesses are less and less needing to be centered in an office setting. Many businesses now are operated from home. This can be advantageous in so many ways. This article will offer some tips about being a home businesses operator.

Running your home based business is a challenge, it is important to reward yourself so you will stay motivated. For instance, for every work related task that you complete from your list, you could reward yourself with fifteen minutes of non work activities. This will help to keep you focused and motivated.

Ensure that your home business is properly insured, by discussing the business with an insurance agent. You should also make sure that your home business complies with local zoning laws and city ordinances. You don't want to start a dog care business, if there is a limit to the amount of animals you can have on your property.

Keep an attitude that will bring you success in your home business venture. If you go about your day thinking of your home business as a hobby, you are not going to see the success that you would if you really considered it to be your real job. Keep a business attitude even when your business is in your home.

It is wise to engage the services of a professional accountant early in your home business career. Even the simplest home business owner is in a far more complex tax situation than a salaried employee. A tax expert can ensure that you avoid any pitfalls awaiting you in home business ownership, and make sure you meet all of your tax obligations.

Use a spreadsheet to keep track of your business activity. You can enter mileage, purchases, income and other business related transactions all in one spreadsheet using different columns. Use formulas to run totals on the columns and tax time will not seem quite so threatening.

One way you can keep your home business on track is to set fixed hours for working on it. Running a business out of your home can tempt you to put off your work or prioritize other interests ahead of it. By committing to a relatively inflexible schedule, you can encourage yourself to treat your business professionally.

In order to make your home business successful, make your website attractive. The number one thing a person notices when they click on a website is its design. If the website is too flashy or too plain, it may turn customers off. If you are unsure how to design your website, there are many tools online.

Keep everything you commonly use on your desk or at your workbench within easy reach. That may seem like an obvious tip but if you always have to over extend or even get up from your work area to get something you need then your aren't organizing your area efficiently. Organize according to need.

In order to make a home business successful, your business must be found in the Google search results. Search engine optimization is key in succeeding in today's business world. Many different companies offer tools for search engine optimization, and it is imperative that you employ a few different strategies in order to obtain success.

Leveraging social media for your home business is an absolute must! Both brick-and-mortar stores as well as online-only companies will find that it not only expands your reach but also creates a conversation with your customers. People love it when a company replies to their questions or comments on Twitter or Facebook!

Get your friends and family to promote your home business for you. Give them business cards so they can hand them out to the people they know who might want to use your services. You can even make it a fun game by putting a coupon code on the card which is specific to the individual you give it to, and then the person with the most referrals wins a prize!

Keep your equipment up to date. If you buy equipment that you obviously need for your business, such as office supplies or a computer, you can deduct your expenses from your taxes. To avoid getting in trouble, do not write off expenses that might fit into what you bought for your home rather than your business.

To reduce distractions keep your office off limits to children. Have set work hours that enable you to run your business and still have time for your family. Older children should understand not to disturb you while you are working. For your business to succeed your family needs to be supportive and respectful of your work schedule.

It is extremely important to set up specific space and time to work. When you are interrupted, you must maintain those work-at- home boundaries. With small children, child care is required as if you were not home. As the owner, you don't have any benefits. Sick days, vacations, and paid holidays are a thing of the past.

Sony's PS4 will lose the console war with its lame video-streaming strategy

Congratulations, Sony, you just lost the console war.

Sony held reporters hostage for two hours Wednesday as it unveiled a new PlayStation controller, made a lot of promises about the PlayStation 4 and showed all the demos in the world. What it didn't show us, aside from an actual PlayStation 4, is any kind of streaming-video strategy aside from the obligatory nod to Netflix. And thus it sealed its fate. There simply is no way Sony can compete with Microsoft without streaming video.

Andrew House, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, told the assembled press, "The living room is no longer the center of the console ecosystem, the gamer is." Sony wants games to go with you everywhere. That's a smart move, but no matter how you spin it, the PlayStation must be part of the living room if it is to have any hope of taking on the Xbox 360 - and any future consoles coming out of Redmond.

Sony was vague about pretty much everything regarding PlayStation 4. And it said nothing whatsoever about its video content plan -- in fact, the only hint that Sony even has a video content plan was a slide featuring Netflix, Hulu and the like. Sony must do better than that. A lot better. Gamers increasingly look to their consoles as the gateway to streaming content. This is especially true for one of the PlayStation's largest audiences, 20-something cord cutters. Ignoring that audience to show off 90 minutes of demos was a huge mistake. Anyone who watches TV and plays games will be wary of a console that only plays games while taking up valuable HDMI port space.

Microsoft gets this, and has been extremely aggressive in ensuring you keep your Xbox 360 on all the time. Microsoft has teamed up with many on-demand services to bring content to the console. Sure, I can share a video of a game I just played with the yet-to-be-seen PlayStation 4, but can I use it as a DVR cable box? How will I watch Girls and Downtown Abbey on this thing?

Sony's quick mention of streaming apps like Netflix was followed by a promise to talk more about its strategy in the coming year. But if the photo of video-streaming apps that appeared on stage during the presentation is any indication, PlayStation 4 doesn't offer anything more than PlayStation 3. That's a big fail these days. Having a Netflix app on your console is nothing. Everything has a Netflix app. You can watch Netflix on phones, tablets, computers, Blu-ray players and ovens. That's not a strategy, that's keeping up with two years ago.

And so we wait for more news from a company that once upon a time built really cool products people wanted. Sure the demos were dazzling with fire, explosions and so much soft lens flare. But open HDMI ports on HDTVs are scarce, and Sony is entering a tough market. Why would anyone buy a device that does one thing (games) marginally better than another device that also lets you watchGame of Thrones the day it airs? They wouldn't.

The game has changed. It's not just about games anymore.

Drew Peterson gets 38 years for murdering third wife

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) ? Drew Peterson ? the swaggering Chicago-area police officer who gained notoriety after his much-younger fourth wife vanished in 2007 ? was sentenced to 38 years in prison on Thursday for murdering his third wife.

The sentence came moments after Peterson shocked the courtroom with a rare public outburst of anger as he proclaimed his innocence in the death of Kathleen Savio.

"I did not kill Kathleen!" he shouted at the top of his lungs, emphasizing every word.

Peterson seemed to look across the courtroom at Savio's family. Savio's sister Susan Doman shot back "Yes, you did. You liar!" before the judge ordered sheriff's deputies to remove her from the courtroom.

Illinois does not have the death penalty, and the 59-year-old Peterson had faced a maximum 60-year prison term. The judge gave him four years' credit for time he has served since his arrest.

Jurors convicted Peterson in September in Savio's 2004 death. Neighbors found the 40-year-old's body in a dry bathtub at home with a gash on her head ? her hair soaked in blood.

Peterson is also a suspect in the disappearance of Stacy Peterson ? who was 23-years-old when she vanished ? but he hasn't been charged in her case. It was her disappearance that led authorities to take another look at Savio's death and eventually reclassify it from an accident to a homicide.

Fascination nationwide with Drew Peterson arose from speculation he sought to use his law enforcement expertise to get away with murder.

After his courtroom outburst, Peterson addressed the judge with a rambling speech, claiming he had been railroaded. He spoke in mostly hushed tones, crying and trying to regain his composure at times. His voice quivered and his hands were shaking as he reached out for a glass of water.

He aimed some of his anger at lead prosecutor James Glasgow, saying sarcastically that Glasgow could now celebrate because he had destroyed Peterson's life.

"You perpetrated the largest railroad job ever in this country," Peterson told him. Minutes later, Peterson challenged Glasgow to look him in the eyes. Glasgow, who had been taking notes, laid down his pen, folded his arms and looked straight back at Peterson.

"Never forget what you've done here," Peterson said, gritting his teeth.

Peterson had divorced Savio a year before her death. His motive for killing her, prosecutors said, was fear that a pending settlement would wipe him out financially.

"We all got an opportunity to see a psychopath reveal himself in open court," Glasgow told reporters after Thursday's hearing as he called Peterson a "cold-blooded killer."

Before Thursday, Peterson had never publicly showed concern about the serious charges and the possible sentence he faced. The glib, cocky former police officer seemed to taunt authorities before his 2009 arrest, suggesting a "Win a Date With Drew Contest" and then, after his arrest, "Win a Conjugal Visit With Drew Contest." More recently, his story inspired a TV movie starring Rob Lowe.

His personality loomed large over his trial, illustrated by crowds of bystanders gathered outside the courthouse in a circuslike atmosphere after his conviction last year, cheering as prosecutors walked by and shouting, "Loser. Loser. Loser," at defense attorneys.

Savio's family members told the judge Thursday that they hoped she was somehow watching the proceedings.

"I hope she is haunting him in his dreams," said Henry Savio Jr., the victim's brother. "I hope ... she is watching his descent into hell."

Savio added his only consolation was that Peterson would be "rotting in prison for the rest of his life."

The verdict was a vindication for Glasgow and his team, who gambled by putting on a case they conceded was filled with holes.

Prosecutors had no physical evidence tying Peterson to Savio's death and no witnesses placing him at the scene. They were forced to rely on typically barred hearsay ? statements Savio made to others before she died and that Stacy Peterson made before she vanished. Illinois passed a hearsay law in 2008 tailored to Drew Peterson's case, dubbed "Drew's Law," which assisted in making some of the evidence admissible at Peterson's trial.

The hearsay ? any information reported by a witness not based on the witness' direct knowledge ? included a friend testifying that Savio told her Peterson once put a knife to her throat and warned her, "I could kill you and make it look like an accident."

A turning point at the trial came when the defense called a divorce attorney who said he spoke to Stacy Peterson before she vanished. Rather than blunting her credibility, the witness stressed to jurors that Stacy Peterson seemed to truly believe her husband killed Savio.

Earlier Thursday, Judge Edward Burmila denied a defense request to grant Drew Peterson a retrial. Peterson's current attorneys contended his former lead attorney, Joel Brodsky, botched the initial trial and had been the one to decide to call Smith to the stand. Brodsky stepped down from the defense team in November, as his quarrel with Peterson's current lawyers worsened.

Prosecutors suspect Peterson killed his sandy-haired fourth wife because she could finger him for Savio's death, but her body has never been found and no charges have ever been filed. Jurors weren't supposed to link her disappearance to Savio's death, and prosecutors were prohibited from mentioning the subject.

Peterson has maintained his fourth wife ran off with another man and is still alive.

Peterson's attorneys have said they might appeal all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court on grounds Illinois' hearsay law is unconstitutional.

NCAA says three former Miami assistants misled investigators

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The NCAA believes former Miami assistant coaches Clint Hurtt, Aubrey Hill and Jorge Fernandez provided false or misleading information during the probe into the Hurricanes' athletic department.

The NCAA said all three violated "principles of ethical conduct" as part of the notice of allegations served against the Hurricanes, according to a person who spoke to the Associated Press on Wednesday on condition of anonymity because the allegations have not been released publicly.

Hurtt and Hill were members of Miami's football staff. Fernandez worked on the men's basketball staff.

Several other coaches are named or referenced in the allegations, including Missouri basketball coach Frank Haith. But only Hurtt, Hill and Fernandez are facing the ethical-conduct charge, commonly known as NCAA Rule 10.1.

Hurtt is currently on the staff at Louisville. Hill is not working as a coach at this time, and Fernandez spent last season as an assistant at Marshall, resigning last May.

The notice of allegations was delivered to Miami on Tuesday, and the university is facing the charge that it had a "lack of institutional control" -- one of the worst things the NCAA can levy against a member school. The charge revolves around how the school allegedly failed to monitor conduct of Nevin Shapiro, a rogue booster and convicted felon who provided cash, gifts and other items to players on the football and men's basketball teams.

University president Donna Shalala said Tuesday night that the Hurricanes have suffered enough already through self-imposed sanctions. Through a university spokesman, she declined further comment Wednesday.

The NCAA said Hurtt and Hill committed the same violations, at least related to the ethical-conduct matter.

The NCAA alleged both provided meals, transportation and lodging to either recruits, current players or both in either 2008 or 2009. Both were interviewed by the NCAA during the course of its probe and allegedly denied providing those extra benefits, statements the NCAA said were contradicted in each case by what players told them separately.

Hurtt also took a $2,500 personal loan from Shapiro, which was repaid. The NCAA also believes he sent about 40 impermissible text messages to recruits, which typically is a secondary, or minor, violation.

Fernandez, the NCAA alleged, "knowingly provided extra benefits" in the form of an air ticket. The NCAA said Fernandez denied using air miles for the tickets for a men's basketball player and a high school coach, despite evidence to the contrary.

In February 2012, Miami center Reggie Johnson was ruled ineligible by the school after an investigation revealed that members of his family accepted "impermissible travel benefits" from a member of the school's former coaching staff, without specifying Fernandez or anyone else by name. The university said Johnson was not aware of the benefits, personally accepted nothing and that his family had been told they were allowed.

Johnson was reinstated quickly last season, and remains a key part of this season's team -- now ranked No. 2 in the nation and leading the Atlantic Coast Conference. The ongoing cloud of the scandal is not hurting the Hurricanes, basketball coach Jim Larranaga said Tuesday night.

"If it was overshadowing what we were doing, this room would not be packed," Larranaga said after his team beat Virginia. "We're getting so much exposure. We can only focus on the things we have control over. We have nothing to do with the investigation."

Several other former Miami coaches are named in the allegations as well, including one-time men's basketball assistant Jake Morton, who the NCAA said, among other things, accepted "supplemental income" of at least $6,000 from Shapiro. Morton is now on the staff at Western Kentucky.

Missouri's Haith is accused of failing "to promote an atmosphere for compliance," a charge specific to how he handled things when Shapiro allegedly wanted money in exchange for not going public with accusations that he paid to help the Hurricanes recruit a player.

Some of the allegations are more than 10 years old, including a claim that Shapiro bought a suit for former Miami star running back Willis McGahee to wear to the Heisman Trophy ceremony in 2002.

Other allegations include that he paid for dinners at Benihana, televisions, sneakers, Miami Heat tickets, bowling parties, one player's engagement ring, a used washer-dryer set for current New England Patriots lineman Vince Wilfork, and that he directed his girlfriend to give two former Hurricanes no-show jobs for a couple of months.
